The New York Times bestselling hockey series featuring the Carolina Cold Fury continues as the team’s most notorious party animal gets blindsided by the one that got away.

Off the ice, elite defenseman Hawke Therrien enjoys his fair share of booze and good times. And why shouldn’t he? He’s worked his way up from the minor leagues and made himself a star. The only thing Hawke misses from that life is the pierced, tattooed free spirit who broke his heart without so much as an explanation. She’s almost unrecognizable when she walks back into his life seven years later—except for the look in her eyes that feels like a punch to the gut.

Vale Campbell isn’t the same girl she was at twenty. As crazy as she was about Hawke, her reckless behavior and out-of-control drinking were starting to scare her. She had to clean up her act, and that would never happen with Hawke around. Cutting him loose was the hardest thing Vale ever had to do—until now. Because she’s still crazy about Hawke. And if he could ever learn to forgive her, they just might have a future together.

Every once in a while you read a book that just feels perfect.  It’s exactly what you’re looking for at exactly the right time and it just ticks all your boxes and gives you that warm satisfied sense of peace.  I don’t know if I was jonesing for a GREAT sports book or a WONDERFUL romance or an AMAZING new book boyfriend…..but I definitely got all three.

I’ve read all of the Cold Fury books and I’ve enjoyed them all, but let’s be honest…we all have our favorites.  I have friends who love Alex and others who love Garrett and one or two that fell for Ryker.  But mine has always been Zack, then again I’m a sucker for a little heartbreak (OK a lot of heartbreak in that one).  This book however…this one really made me question my loyalty to poor Zack because Hawke is freaking amazing.  I simply adored him.  I loved how he handles things, I loved who he is as a man, I loved his sense of humor….I just LOVED him.  I have to admit, I was skeptical about them bringing in a brand new Cold Fury player, but I can acknowledge when I’m wrong.  I was SO wrong.

Vale is a pretty awesome character too.  She’s strong and determined and independent.  I completely understood and believed her struggle to be a grown up, to do the right thing and to navigate her way through a lot of confusing and upsetting thing that have been thrown her way.  There were times I wanted to grab her shoulders and shake her and times I wanted to cry for her and tell her it was going to be ok.

God, I just can’t get enough of good second chance romances and this is one of my favorites.  This book is just so heartfelt, at times both incredibly sad and remarkable uplifting.  I have never wanted to believe in true love and meant to be more.  Sawyer Bennett just got everything right in this one.

4 Star Review

I’m a huge fan of the Cold Fury Hockey Series, every one of these books (and these men) have their own unique stories and I could not wait to read Ryker’s.  I loved Ryker when he was introduced in the previous book, especially his friendship with Zack and Kate and I was looking forward to watching him with his two girls.  And he did not disappoint..

Ryker was so different than I expected in this book.  I thought of him as such a strong, tough character…and he is, but more than any other guy on this team…OMG he is just a giant teddy bear.  He’s just a freaking good guy.  It’s been forever since I was able to find a lead male character that was nice and normal and not emotionally damaged or stunted, but who was still hot and manly and strong.  He’s amazing to his daughters, he’s good to his friends, he’s fair with his ex-wife and he is selfless with Gray….absolutely selfless in the best possible way.

Gray is a fabulous heroine…maybe my favorite of the series (yeah…definitely my favorite).  She is wicked smart and determined, fearless, tough and a definite role model.  More importantly she is smashing through the “glass ceiling” in professional hockey, as the league’s first and only general manager.  But no matter how attracted she is to Ryker,  in a league where almost everyone wants her to fail, even members’ of her own team,  she knows how bad it would be if anyone found out she was dating one of her own players.  Watching her struggle to figure out what’s right for her, what’s right for her man and what’s right for her team is tough.  Watching her figure out what she wants is awesome, watching her finally go after it…spectacular.

This book was the most fun of the entire series for me and Ryker is my favorite Cold Fury man (and actually Gray is my favorite Cold Fury woman). But I’m not going to lie, Zack’s book is still my favorite over all of the series…probably because I really like angst  and that book had it in spades.  This, however,  is certainly my second favorite and definitely the feel good  book of the series.

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett goes for a hat trick with the latest romance in a sexy series about cool-as-ice hockey players and the women heating up their lives.

Rising star Zack Grantham has been stuck in a downward spiral of grief ever since the car accident that left him a single dad and put his career on hold. Back on the road with the Carolina Cold Fury and still crippled by emotional baggage, he’s in need of some serious help with his son. But while the nerdy new nanny wins his son’s heart, Zack isn’t sure he’s ready for a woman’s touch—even after getting a glimpse of the killer curves she’s hiding under those baggy clothes.

Kate Francis usually keeps men like Zack at a distance. Though his athlete’s body is honed to perfection, he refuses to move on with his life—and besides, he’s her boss. Still, the sparks between them are undeniable, tempting Kate to turn their professional relationship into a personal one. But before she makes a power play for Zack’s wounded heart, Kate will have to open him up again and show him that love is worth the fight.

So I loved Alex…and I really really liked Garrett, but it turns out I didn’t really know what love was until Zack. I adored this book and Zack and Ben….but especially Kate. Kate is amazing.

This is the absolute best book yet in an amazing series. Because of the subject matter, Zack was so much better than the vast majority of books on the market today. Having been introduced to Zack and Gina in the previous two books, I was instantly and more acutely drawn into Zack’s pain. It made for a heart-wrenching story right from the start.

Zack’s pain and guilt over Gina and her death were so wonderfully expressed and emotionally believable that the story came across as incredibly REAL. That’s what made it better than most of the books out there, the emotions, the angst, the conflicts and the relationships were so damn real. I felt Zack’s pain. I understood his guilt and I believed his fear.

And Kate was a phenomenal character, one of my favorite female leads in a long time. I LOVED the way she handled everything thrown at her with grace and love and understanding. Her connection with Ben was wonderful and her care and compassion for Zack was a beautiful thing to see. It was terrific to see a woman with poise, control and character.

Book 1 in the series, ALEX was fabulous. Book 2, GARRETT was great too. But this book….this is the ONE! This is one of my top reads in the last two years and read approximately. 150 books a year. It’s that good. Definitely a book I will go back to again and again.
