From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Douglas comes a new dark romance…

I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became
my obsession.

His name is Michael Crist.

My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through
your hand to watch. He’s handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star
of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the
dirt on his shoe than me.

But I noticed him.

I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For
years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.

Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped
watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my
head anymore.

Because he’s finally noticed me.

Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.

My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our
dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I
can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body,
I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.

Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.

In my city.

The opportunity is too good to be true, as well as the timing. Because you see,
three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now
they’re out.

We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will
come true.

*Corrupt is a STANDALONE dark romance with no cliffhanger. It is suitable for
ages 18+.

Kristys Review (2)6 StarsI’m going to start by saying that Penelope Douglas wrote one of my very favorite series (The Fall Away Series and if you haven’t read it YOU NEED TO).  Consequently, my expectations for Corrupt were exceedingly high, especially considering it promised to be darker than the Fall Away books and I seriously love dark reads.  All I can say is Penelope Douglas completely obliterated my expectations, she left them floundering in her dust, she actually made me feel silly for setting them so low.
There was so much I loved about this book that I hardly know where to start.
First, this is not one story.  This book is two stories, unfolding simultaneously, both of which are completely enthralling, captivating and heart pounding.  You are getting the present story of Erika out on her own and unknowingly at the mercy of the Four Horsemen, 4 hot as hell men with no limits, who hold her responsible for destroying life as they knew it.  Plus, you get the story of Devil’s Night, three years before.  The night Erika ran with the Horsemen and all of their lives were change irrevocably.  The skill it takes to keep two separate stories interesting, engaging and on track is amazing to me and Penelope does it to perfection.
Then, there was the fact that these stories, both of them, were heart pounding, shocking and breath-taking.  I was on edge for the last 40% of this book, I could hardly breathe I was so on edge….and I loved every single second of it.  The Horsemen were intense, scary and unrestrained.  I was never sure how far they were willing to go, how much danger Erika was really in and how crazy this story was going to get (and it does get crazy).  And, on top of all of the suspense, this book was a love story, with two people who were drawn to each other despite a million circumstances determined to keep them apart.  I generally don’t like mysteries or suspense mixed in with my romances, I feel like all to often the relationships and the romance take a back seat to the mystery, leaving me feeling jipped and not invested. So not the case here, I was fully invested and complete enthralled and the relationship between Micheal and Erika was so completely enhanced by the danger and drama.
Lastly, the characters MADE THIS BOOK.
The supporting characters were complete and well developed with just the right amount of backstory and personality to make you feel for them and with them.  I can’t wait until they all have books of their own.  And Michael was drool worthy.  I adored him in a way that hasn’t happened to me for a while.  Keep in mind I love a complex, angry, confusing a**hole of a leading man.  I want my leading man to be tortured and conflicted and unable to resist the pull towards the woman he shouldn’t want, but I also need him protective, emotional, hot and sweet.  Not to much to asked right?  Michael delivers in spades ON EVERYTHING !!

What surprised the hell out of me in this book was Erika…..I ADORED her in a way I have adored no other.  She is SPECTACULAR !!!  My God I wanted to BE her or date her, I couldn’t decide which (and I’m straight BTW).  Erika is reckless and brave and tough as nails.  She craves the rush and the exhilaration she gets from running with the Horseman…and when they turn on her, she welcomes the challenge, refusing to back down and completely enamored with the game.  She’s also compassionate, romantic and loyal.  God I loved her character…did I mention that?  Everything about this book is done to perfection in my opinion, but Erika Fane is what put it over the top for me, lifting it easily into my top 10 of 2015.  Do not pass this one up.
