WHAT KIND OF TWISTED REALITY IS THIS?

TWIN SAVAGE COVER

Title: Twin Savage
Author: Sunniva Dee
Release Date: October 16, 2017

BLURB

Grief comes in many forms.
There is no right or wrong way to grieve… Right?
Except, what if you douse that grief with sex
in ways so culturally unacceptable
you leave it to a veritable male harem
led by the porn-star brother of your fiancé
to decide if you’ll emerge
from the jungle intact?

Twin Savage is standalone book #2 in the Porn Star Boyfriend series.

✨✨✨✨✨

It wasn’t a problem to be the only girl in a house full of guys.
Until my fiancé died and his identical twin took over the roost.

Sweet, easygoing Julian passed, while loathsome, bossy Luka, who pays his way through med school by getting his dick wet on film, is still alive.

What kind of twisted reality is this?

Now, Luka’s on a mission to fix both of our grief.
Like I’d ever accept anything from him.
He doesn’t understand that gorgeous and sexy mean nothing if you’re a promiscuous jerk.

If only the nights didn’t destroy me.
They’re painful and long and empty,
until, on a Monday night, my insomnia attracts Diego.
That Tuesday, it attracts Lenny.
Next, it’s Marlon, James, Nathaniel,
and on Saturday, it’s Connor.

By Sunday night, I get the picture.
This is Luka doing what Luka does: solve problems with sex.
His remote-controlled comfort leaves me in our roommates’ arms six of seven nights.
On Sunday, there’s only one man left in the house.

There’s no way in hell I’m opening my door—or my heart—to a porn star.

TS loved you for a very long time

Once again, Sunniva Dee puts her unique twist on a story and makes you second guess everything you think you know about romance. She gives you subtle nuances and she slaps you in the face with reality. She is amazing at giving you exactly what you expect and hitting you with the things you never saw coming. Most importantly, she gives you stories that are anything but predictable.

I was a big fan of Geneva. She was smart and strong and doing her best to get through a terrible tragedy. She was not a big fan of Luka, but after everything she went through, it made sense she needed someone to direct her anger towards. She also needed comfort, and when Luka was unable to do it himself, he made sure someone was looking out her for. Luka was his own kind of interesting. He was a series of contradictions, at times the perfect guy and other time the polar opposite of that. I didn’t always love everything Luka did, but at other times I loved him completely. If I could say one thing I wish was different, I wish I had gotten to know Luka better in the first part of the book.

This story took me places I never expected (both literally and figuratively) and I loved almost all of it (except when I really hated it LOL) As always, Sunniva Dee isn’t content to make you feel one or two emotions, she wants you to feel ALL of the emotions and this book definitely delivers.

BED TALK

“I wish he didn’t do that,” I tell Lenny as I relax, cheek on his chest, drawing small circles around his nipple. “Luka thinks he’s the king of this place, in charge of everything that goes on here.”

“He kind of is.” Lenny’s voice is lazy. By now, I know he slides into a euphoric coma after he ejaculates. It’s adorable and a tad hot.

“No, he isn’t. Only about the rent and the utilities.”

“And about you.”

I lift my head and squint at him. “Luka is not in charge of me.”

Lenny narrows his eyes too, an easy feat. I ignore how beautiful he is beneath me. “No, but he’s who came up with our solution.”

“What are you talking about?”

He studies me, eyes widening more than usual after against-the-wall sex. “Hmm, you look like you’re working yourself up.”

“What does it matter? Just give me the lowdown.”

“Well, if you’re gonna go witch-nutty on me, I don’t know if I should.”

I lower my voice. “Witch-nutty? What does that even mean?”

“You know. All…” He lifts his hands in the air and waves them lazily while half-rolling his eyes. Not impressive.

“What solution, Lenny, or your sex life has to fend for itself from now on.”

“As if it doesn’t six days out of the week.”

“What did Luka come up with?”

“We had a house meeting.”

“Without me?”

“It was about you, so yeah. We saw how you were struggling to keep it together after Julian passed away, and Luka came up with what we’re doing now.”

“As in invading my bedroom every night? Taking turns with me?”

“I guess?” He looks at me as if he just realizes how bad it sounds.

“That’s some crazy shit. Only a pervert like Luka could’ve come up with it.”

Lenny’s brows tick in a furrow. “Well, I figured it was too obvious to work on you, but Luka insisted, we gave it a try, and hey, you went along with it. You seem better too.”

My stomach churns. “Who does he think he is? He has no right to set up some get-’er-done plan for me. I’m in charge of my own life, my own future, and…” I sigh. “Luka’s a pig.”

I mean it. Even though I’m disgruntled, I twist my arms around Lenny’s middle needing his nearness. I’m not exactly backing myself up, here, but Lenny doesn’t hold it against me. Instead he wraps me closer and nuzzles against my hair. Murmurs, “Shh, you’re okay, babe.”

“What about the days? Did he assign them too?”

Lenny nods, rocking us with his chin. “Yeah, which made sense.”

“Why, because you didn’t want to deal with me more than once a week?”

He chuckles. “It was more so that we’d all have our turns consoling you.”

Sleeping with me, you mean,” I say, feeling slutty and berating myself for it in the same thought.

“I’m not gonna lie and say it’s not a pleasure to comfort you.”

I arch an eyebrow. “So I shouldn’t feel bad for you guys?”

“You should.”

I let out a huh?

“Did you see Marlon earlier?”

I bite my lip. “Yes?”

“That’s how most of us feel the rest of the week. Tuesdays are the shit.”

“Even when I go all witch-nutty on you?”

His grin gleams white. “Have you heard me complain? Sparks are the shit too.”

VISIT AT THE STUDIO

Luke stands back, nodding once, and links his thumb in a front pocket while the director of Thousand and One Nights shakes my hand.

“It’s nice to meet you, Geneva. She’s beautiful,” Gianni Alexie tells Luka and smiles. Luka lets out a soft grunt of agreement.

I think I expected Alexie to ogle me, but he’s polite, not spending a second on my unassuming boobs and legs. “I can see why you don’t want your girl in the jungle on her own,” he says.

I open my mouth to object against the your-girl part but think better of it. One side of my brain believes they’ll want to pull me into their game if I’m single. The other side explains that I’m an idiot if I think they use un-auditioned women with pro studs they pay big money.

“Would you like to wait in the Green Room?” Mr. Alexie asks, lifting a meaty hand and already waving toward a wiry assistant with a clipboard.

“Oh no, my baby’s here to watch firsthand. She got sick of getting it secondhand through the movies.”

“Oh, of course.” Alexie nods like this is common. “Hal! Grab another chair, will you? Geneva’ll be up close. Up close?” He raises his brows in a question, first to me, then to Luka while I remain quietly shell-shocked.

“You wanted up-close, right, baby?” Luka whispers against my ear. The intimacy of it doesn’t disturb Alexie. He’s perfectly at ease, gaze on our interaction while he waits for the answer.

“Yep,” I say, trying to make my brave-blurt sound believable.

Luka keeps a hand on my shoulder as he leans into the director, murmuring, “It turns her on.”

“Of course,” Alexie answers easily while all the blood congregates in my face.

I’d love to slip out of here in this second, but if I did, Luka would win and he’d have more fodder for his teasing. I fake another smile, ignoring the flames in my cheeks. Luka’s stomach tenses with suppressed laughter against my hip. Oh I’ll get him back. Just wait until the jungle. Mwa. Ha. Ha.

“Well, enjoy the show. We love Luka around here. He’s a true artist and always gives one hundred percent. You should be proud of him.”

“Oh yeah, so proud,” I garble. It seems my expression pulls off sincere, though, because Alexie sends me another genuine smile and delivers a last pat on the shoulder.

“See you at lunch.”

Synopsis

I guess I just forgot.
To ask him what he did for a living, I mean.
By the time I did, I was in—balls deep, as he’d say.
He was the perfect boyfriend.
Attentive, gorgeous, guessing my every wish and fulfilling them.
The sex was earth-shattering.
He even dealt with my crazy mom the way no one else could.
He popped the question, God, such a perfect guy.
There was just one issue:
He fucked other girls on camera for a living.
How the hell do you deal with that?

Excerpt

It’s been three days since he left.

I have a photo of him on my phone.

I know what to do with it.

He’s an actor. He makes films. All I need is to Google his photo, and I’ll get that artist name he doesn’t want to give me.

So much secrecy. Deep down I know why. The news that photo will bring me will be terrible, and I’m a dunce for not accepting the writing on the wall when it’s scribbled in black, sloppy italics all around me, yeah—dunce.

I should upload it to Google.

It’s so easy.

Ciro has rented a yacht for the weekend, and he’s paid off Il Signore to have me come along as his personal waitress. My boss knows we’re together, I’m sure. He also loves my boyfriend’s restaurant tip every time he orders out.

I’m on my bed after a long night shift at Mintrer’s, cell phone in hand and his beautiful, smiling picture open in my photo album. He looks at me like he thinks I’m the world. He looks at me like this photo is for me and I’d never betray him. He looks at me with love in his eyes.

He’ll be back on Thursday. It’s only four more days. What are four days when we have three indescribable months behind us? I owe it to him to wait.

“I’ve made my mistakes,” Ciro said. “I want to do it right with you.”

I make his photo into my screensaver.

I’ve been reading Sunniva Dee books for a long time now and I have to admit….this is one of my favorites. I knew from the second I heard the title that this book was going to be good…I just knew it. I love being right!!! LOL  These characters had me hooked from the beginning and so did the story. It just flowed so effortlessly. so believably, so completely organically.

CIro was the perfect book boyfriend, he was hot, smart, romantic, attentive…everything a girl could want in a boy. He was too good to be true….literally. You can’t help but fall for him. He’s genuine and honest to a fault and just a damn good guy….but, you know….porn!!! His profession aside, Ciro was a character that sucked me in, made me feel his emotions and had me rooting for him at every turn. I totally understood Savannah falling for him. I completely understood her not asking that one important question. I REALLY understood everything she did both before and after that one life changing moment. Both characters were real and relatable and completely fleshed out in a way that kept this book from being a novelty and made it a legitimate romance instead.

This book had my emotions all over the place. The tension was thick for me through most of this one. I was on the edge of my seat, so wound up about what was coming. (I love that feeling, like when you’re on a roller coaster, at the top of the first big hill, waiting with excitement and dread for the fall. That’s how most of this book made me feel.) I was pulling for them as a couple the entire time, but I was also pulling for them as individuals. At different times my heart soared and broke for them both. At times, I really couldn’t see how there could be a resolution that would be right and true and fair for both characters. But in true Sunniva fashion, she did the entire story justice with an ending that I never really saw coming. Honestly, one of her best books to date.

EXCERPT:

I slept over at his house. I did. I just couldn’t go home after everything he told me. I didn’t accept the invite to come with him on the boat today though. I didn’t ask him if he was going without me either. If he is, wouldn’t he be inviting some “friends,” some Alicias or Silks? I don’t want to know.

It’s not difficult to get my shifts back at Mintrer’s. With Il Signore’s nonna at the hospital, the family spends as much time at her bedside as they can.

Mom calls.

She sounds okay.

I need to verify in person even though Paul is next door, hopefully keeping her busy with his garden statues and homemade fountains. He likes my quirky mother because he’s quirky himself. That’s my guess anyway. I don’t think I can handle any new rocks hurled at Status Quo at the moment, especially not from Mom.

The boat is ready.

I only returned to my house two hours again, and this is what Ciro texts me? I roll my eyes. Frieda lowers the bagel she held up for me—everything or just sesame seeds?—and says, “That isn’t the porn star, is it?”

“Yeah, it’s Drake Constantine.” I pull out the syllables mocking him even though each sound opens my chest again.

“Well, at least he’s got a nice artist name. He’s no Jake daBoner or Cassius Erectus.”

I snort.

“Drake Constantine boned me in the ass last night,” she quotes as if from Shakespeare. She gazes beyond the bagel she now holds up like a skull.

I chuckle a little bit, and Frieda smiles. Smiles so wide it makes me feel guilty over everything I’ve put her through. I know she suffers with me. She didn’t sleep last night knowing I was with Ciro.

“What’s he saying?”

“He tells me he’s got the boat ready.”

“For that Catalina trip?”

“Mhmm.”

“You’re not doing that too, are you?” She drops the halves of the bagel into the toaster.

“Not the everything,” I say. “Can I have the sesame seed one instead?”

She presses her mouth together in a stern line but listens and fishes the everything one out and drops the sesame bagel in instead. “Happy now?”

“Very.”

“You’re not going, right?”

“No.” I want to slap my heart and my body for agreeing that we should say yes. “I already told you. I’m visiting Mom this morning, and then I’m working. If I get to do some overtime this weekend, I’m happy. I need the money, and I really don’t want to mope around the house.”

I’ll wait for you if you’re asleep.

I said I wasn’t going. Can’t. We

I hit “send” before I can finish the “We’re over, remember?” part. It was easier to yell it to him when I was furious. Today, I don’t know how I feel.

Why can’t you? He doesn’t ask about the We part? He knows.

“He’s so stubborn,” I murmur and type again.

Because, when are you seeing someone else for a f*** fest?

He deserves that I’m being crude. Hell, he’s being crude every hour of every work day.

He takes a moment to reply. Long enough for Frieda to scoot a plate and the tub of cream cheese in front of me. “Stop texting with him. You’re only dragging it out. You know that, right? I thought you’d blocked him.”

“He has a work phone too. On-freaking-call cell. Ha!”

Cugs is a pro at both games, but only one can secure him a college scholarship. It should be an easy decision, a no-brainer—if Newbark hadn’t proffered the only life he knows.

When his long-lost sister makes contact, lies are uncovered and truths revealed. Suddenly, Cugs finds himself questioning both plans and loyalties. Because sometimes the only way to move forward is by pulling the bottom out of the past.

EXCERPT:

Last night wasn’t good. Dad’s getting more eager. He wants to accomplish so much on his shopping sprees, blaming a more expensive life now that Step-Cynth’s with us. I’m not in a place to meddle, but it seems six-packs of aprons aren’t the only things she buys on his bill.

My father’s becoming sloppy. Yesterday, we returned in the early morning after hitting almost a dozen houses. The owners of four of them were still at home. Yeah. He isn’t doing his homework the way he used to.

Thing is I’m tired. I don’t see a change in sight. Now, I try to keep my eyes open as I drive the wreck to Orlando to meet up with Keyon. Which is going to come back and bite me in the ass. What other option did I have though, come off as a coward to, in the words of Liza, “freaking Keyon Arias of Alliance Cage Warriors?”

Keyon is already there when I enter the Hard Rock Café. He fills out his side of the booth with fighter shoulders and wide thighs. Elbows on the table and bent over a glass of water, he lifts a hand in greeting as soon as he sees me. My chance to chicken out just dissipated.

“Cugs,” he says, voice husky like it is after a fight. Maybe that’s his voice now. I remember it light, prepubescent, I guess, from back when my own had the pitch of a little kid.

“Keyon.” I tip my head, acknowledging him without a smile, and then I sit down in front of him.

“Soda?”

I think of the possibility of going to Gainesville for the tryouts. “Ice water.”

Keyon doesn’t need to do much to get the waitress over. Half-turned to our table, she’s hovering with a watchful eye. When he glances up, she meets his stare immediately and hurries over.

“How are you?” From his expression, he’s not just being polite. He wants to know. “It’s been so long since we’ve talked.”

“I’m good,” I lie.

“What have you been up to? Your sister has been trying to get a hold of you.”

I’ve steeled myself for questions, assuming they would come. I didn’t think he’d start with them right away though.

“Oh you know, living it up in Newbark.” I do a long, purposely fake nod hoping it will make him laugh. Instead, he studies me, starting with my eyes then traveling over my face.

“You liking it there? How’s your old man?”

I shrug, unable to lie about him. “Married again. To a girl Paislee’s age.”

His eyes widen a little. “Is that so?”

“Yeah, as of a few months ago.”

“Geez.” He blows air out his nose. “New stepmother, huh?”

“Yeah, she isn’t exactly Mom.” And there, I said it. I hope he doesn’t notice. I open my mouth to add something, whatever, to get us off the subject, but he jumps in before me.

“You miss your mother?”

Silence.

Snowmen. Hot chocolate. Cold summer lakes. Blue lips.

So YA is kind of new for me. It’s not my usual genre-of-choice, but I love Sunniva’s writing and I figured if she was going to try something new, then I could, too. Plus, I really wanted to hear Cugs’ story. And I’m so glad I did. Cugs is the perfect example of a good guy stuck in terrible circumstances. And man, you can’t help but root for this guy. Cugs was everything I hoped he would be, I loved him. I loved watching him overcome and figure himself out and I especially loved watching him fall in love. I found it so unusual to be reading a story completely from a guys point of view, but I don’t think it could have been done any better. And Nadine was a great heroine. If I had one single critique of this book, it’s that I would have loved more of Cugs and Nadine, but then again…I am Obsessed with Romance.

As always, Sunniva’s writing style isn’t like anyone else’s. She makes the words bend to fit her narrative instead of making her story fit the words. Sometimes it takes me a minute to settle into one of her books, but once I do, I’m completely lost in the world she created. And I loved being lost in there with Cugs. I especially loved the tie-ins to her previous novel, Dodging Trains. I’ll be honest, I don’t think YA is my thing, and I had to remind myself, once or twice, that this was the story of Cugs’ journey, not the story of his romance. But it was a spectacular journey and I’m so glad I was along for the ride.

“Seriously, man. Freddie’s parents are gone the entire weekend, and we’re partying it up. You’ve got to come.” Bear rocks in the passenger seat, trying to get comfortable. We both know the wreck and he are an uneven match.

“I’ll try.”

“Right, your father.” He huffs a frustrated breath. “Never, I swear. Like, ever. I’ve seen you drink freaking twice.”

Florida rain hammers on the roof of the car and hauls ass over my windshield. We’re outside Grocery-Pete’s, waiting for the floodgates to shut so we can get inside.

“Hey, I drink sometimes. With my father.” Dad celebrates good heists with a drink or five. If it’s hard liquor, he’ll loosen tight lips and talk about Mom.

“Come on, Cugs.” Bear tries to arch his back for a better position, but his head hits the ceiling. “Tell me you see how lame that is. ‘I can’t party with y’all, ’cause Imma drink with my daddy.’”

I snort out a laugh. “Whatever, fool.”

My eyes are drawn to Grocery-Pete’s gutter. It’s overflowing. The water takes the fast route over the edge, omitting the drain. I’ve stood under gutters like that, or more like penguin-danced under them in Rigita. Paislee dressed me in thick sweaters and rubber boots and topped it off with full raingear. Then we snuck out the backdoor and ran down the street before we got caught.

“Fascinated, much?” Bear grins.

Rocker Shenanigans: Sylvie + Shandor
Alyson Santos & Sunniva Dee
Publication date: December 19th 2016
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance

They rock hard, play hard, and live life freaking hard. So when it comes to love it’s no surprise they screw up just as hard. Join an amusing cast of characters from Sunniva Dee’s and Alyson Santos’ rock star novels as they meet and pursue each other amidst the backstage chaos of their world.

Rocker Shenanigans is a romantic comedy series of novellas that will toss you into the fun, sexy, and hilarious side of rocker life.

Rocker Shenanigans I:
Sylvie Drake is ecstatic when her rock-goddess sister invites her to a charity event in the Bahamas. With a lineup featuring legends like Night Shifts Black, Clown Irruption, and Tracing Holland, how could this weekend not be totally epic?

One word: Shandor.

Smoldering gaze, cocky smile, and passionate hands that dominate a guitar. Everything about this mysterious stranger screams out-of-her-league.

Shandor Xodyar is here to work. And keep his fiery cousin out of trouble with the threat of former flames breathing down their necks. What he didn’t count on is a three-word bombshell disrupting his mission:

Holland’s teen sister.

Unassumingly sexy, raw, and barely legal, there’s no way entertaining the forbidden electricity can end well.

Then again, some ignored warnings are worth the consequences.

SYLVIE

O.M.G.

I swear his eyes grazed mine before they dismissed me because I’m not famous. Not my sister. But gosh, I want to change his mind. Have to.

I do a quick scan to test my conclusions, but no, only the old cougar with the scandalous miniskirt could have been the other recipient of that smoldering message. Maybe she… no. No! I know nothing about that overload of hotness except he doesn’t need a desperate grandmother to feed his ego. Okay, I don’t know that. Sometimes you just have to have faith, right?

I can’t tell if he wants me to approach or stay the hell away, but I don’t have a choice when the paralysis wears off and my bare legs start guiding me toward his loose-cut jeans. Jeans that hide… I blush. I don’t usually worry about what could be going on in a guy’s jeans.

Say something, Sylvie. And not about his pants.

“I like your guitar.” Ugh! WTH?! I might as well have said I liked his subscription to Time Magazine.

He just stares at me for a moment, and I’m praying that slight slip in his expression is because he didn’t hear me.

“Uh, thanks.”

He’s so not grateful for my praise, but I can’t stop now that I have his attention. I find myself rising on my toes, hoping the slim muscles in my toned thighs are making a pretty picture beneath my tiny shredded shorts. Yes, it’s December. It’s also the Bahamas at a resort that promised a buffet of hot rockers. Funny, I suddenly only notice one. And he needs to notice me.

“I’m Sylvie Drake,” I continue, even though I know that means nothing to him. “My sister is Holland Drake.”

I shoot a thumb toward the opposite corner where my dear sibling is… hanging on Luke. If Luke, then Casey. Thank you grade-nine Algebra, and I’m suddenly annoyed I never got that promised text from Holland. Then again, since my attention zeroed in on this inferno, I haven’t noticed much else. My phone could be replacing the moons of Jupiter with all its flashing and I wouldn’t know it.

“Hi, Sylvia.”

“Sylvie.”

His brows knit because that’s what he said, except he didn’t. Still, I don’t know how to correct him with him looking at me like that. Even slanted in confusion, I feel the intensity of those golden embers shaded by dark lashes. Darnit, I’m Sylvia. It’s fine. I can be Sylvia because he’s… my body doesn’t need words as it answers his piercing concentration with all kinds of adult stuff. Holland would kill me if she knew what was going through my head. So much worse than gin and tonics. So much tastier. Tastier? Too adult. The lady with the miniskirt thinks he’s “tasty.” I think he’s… crap. I suck at this. What would Holland say?

“What key are you playing in?”

Both of these authors have books in my Top Five for 2016. Both of these authors write rocker books, by very favorite kind of romance books. So imagine how excited I was to discover that not only were these two amazing authors writing a book together, but they were mashing up three of my favorite fictional rock bands to do it.

This book is just…..hysterical. I didn’t just laugh out loud, I laughed so hard my side hurt. I kept re-reading parts just so I could laugh again. Considering that the books these characters came from were definitely not RomComs, this book was a wonderful surprise. Sylvie is the best kind of funny, she’s not stupid, just…naive and possibly lacking a filter. Shandor is still classic Shandor, serious and a little stoic, so his amusement at Sylvie’s antics is just adorable. For me though, Luke and Holland may have just stolen the comedy show. Those two just cracked me up.

The best surprise is, not only was this book funny….it was pretty hot and so so sweet. I didn’t just laugh, I swooned hard and got hot under the collar and I even shed a tear or two. This story had heart and I believed the characters and the emotions. So happy to get a chance to read this little gem. I really can’t wait for more from these two.

The Fighter and the Baroness by Sunniva Dee

The Fighter and the Baroness
Sunniva Dee
Publication date: November 29th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Victor Arquette knows the meaning of sacrifice. Destined to legendary status in mixed martial arts, his life is founded on it. Dedication equals sacrifice, and sacrifice means around-the-clock training, no partying, no junk food, no alcohol—and no women.

Helena von Isenlohe is the heiress to Kyria Castle. Due to her father’s lack of financial prowess, the restoration of the ancient German estate rests on Helena’s shoulders. A failed attempt leaves a wealthy man alone at the altar—and the fleeing bride on a plane to the United States.

A chance meeting, and Victor and Helena’s chemistry is undeniable. Except, her presence clutters his focus. Victor shouldn’t crave their nights, shouldn’t be concerned where she is or with whom. And meanwhile in Germany, Kyria Castle deteriorates at a suspicious speed, indebting Helena further to the man she left behind.

Victor and Helena believe in duty. They embrace sacrifice. But when love strikes, it strikes hard, and sometimes you have to choose where your heart is truly at home.

HELENA
My cheeks warm with embarrassment at the people waiting behind me. A female employee helps me unclasp the diamond bracelet and matching necklace. The crown though is impossible to get out of my princess ’do.

“Can I wear it through the security portal?” I ask, broken shoes in one hand.

“No, I’m sorry. It will buzz,” the security person explains. “The portal is created to alert us to most metals besides gold and silver.”

I can’t tell him I wear gold. Real, irreplaceable, century-old heirlooms. He wouldn’t believe me anyway. “If it’s okay with you, I’d like to try.”

He lifts his arms in subtle agreement, a have-it-your-way, and I enter the booth, walk out without incident. Employees from two checkpoints stare at me while I pick my stuff off the band. I shake my head, slowly at first, but then I have nothing to say, no witty comeback, and my flight instinct kicks in. I get up on my toes so I don’t stumble in the too-long skirt and stride as slowly as I can into the transit hall.

I need to not stress the hell out. Just, I wish someone was with me to talk me down. I could call Elfriede. I don’t have my phone. I need a new phone. God, how pathetic am I?

Once I’m sure security isn’t following, I haul butt down the corridor. Tiles are cold under bare feet, it turns out. I’d step into my shoes again, but one of them is broken. Would people stare less if I limped and my heels creak-clacked against the floor?

A high-end fashion store beams in the distance. “We’ll help you blend in. Hurry, hurry,” it calls. I run. Benches are in the way. I’m getting clumsy. I’m panicking. Suddenly, a potted palm tree appears out of nowhere, half-blocking my view of the Promised Land, and my torso doubles around it as I slam to the ground.

I let out an ungraceful oomph. And realize I’m not on the ground after all. No, there’s an arm around me, and miraculously I’m on my feet, wobbly but sort of erect.

“You all right?” an American accent asks.

“I was going to Cloe’s over there,” I explain in German, pointing feebly and not feeling as regal as I’ve been taught. Dark eyebrows contract from within a tanned face above me.

“Sorry?” His arm is still strong around me, really freaking strong, and somehow I’ve got a death grip around it while trying to pry him off.

I translate the same stupid sentence to English. “I was going to Cloe’s. It’s over there.”

His brows are perfectly thick or thin and their arcs are so perfectly perfect they look like they’ve been combed, but then the furrow between them smoothens and I discover his eyes.

Oh.

7 (2)5 Star Review

A Modern Day, New Adult Fairytale with a love story inside a love story that moved me to tears. This is my favorite book from Sunniva Dee, hands down!

Victor Arquette was a Thailand-born orphan, left to fend for himself at the age of three. All he remembers of that time is his best friend—a dog that takes the place of his mother, a feral hunger that nearly kills him, and a teenage fighter who shows him kindness by feeding him and turning him onto mixed martial arts.

Victor—name given to him by his adoptive parents upon observing his fighting skills—is disciplined and determined. He has one goal—to become an MMA fighter in Vegas. That is, until a chance run-in with a beautiful, barefoot, runaway bride at the airport causes him to want more out of his life.

Helena von Isenlohe fled her life as bride-to-be, and heiress to her home—a castle in Germany when she stumbles across Victor. Their attraction is instantaneous. Their connection overwhelming. And their chemistry off the charts.

Neither is looking for love. But they can’t deny what’s happening between them. Despite their efforts to focus on their personal ambitions, love is impossible to ignore.

This book has it all: Sexy MMA fighter, young, princess-like heiress, sweet romance, humor, beautiful writing, a moving storyline. Five Warrior stars from me!

Kristys Review (2)

6 Stars

This is the one. This book right here is the one I’ve been waiting for. I knew Sunniva had this in her. Her last three were great, I loved them…but this book I ADORED. I can’t even explain how happy I am right now.

You have to know I’m a sucker for a bad boy rocker so I expected to like Emil. And he was entertaining in Walking Heartbreak and I had high hopes. But oh my God I never expected to love him like I do. Passionately! I never expected him to make me cry for him, to break my heart, to have me laughing and cheering and screaming. Emil’s pain is palpable, his confusion tangible and his desperation so very emotional. This boy was just a beautiful broken mess.

Then in walks Aishe. Aishe is a character I just got. I totally understood her. She was determined and willful while still being insecure. She was both selfish and caring. She was a dichotomy. A wonderfully interesting dichotomy. I felt her every emotion…her confusion, her hurt, her fear, her lust, mostly her desperate grip on Emil.

I read a lot of books and I like a lot of books, but I am rarely surprised by a book.

Sunniva DeeMy convo w/Sunniva mid-book

Clearly this book surprised me. In the best possible way. I don’t trust Sunniva. I have said before that she is unconventional and unwilling to conform. It makes her a loose cannon. It makes her books a crazy exhilarating ride. I never knew what she was going to do next. And I LOVED that I never knew what she was going to do next.

This book was eloquent even when it was being crude and raw. It was so HOT and wrong and yet absolutely completely right. Perverted and sexy and sad and beautiful. It was crazy. Easily in my top 10 this year and a six star read for sure. This is a book I will read over and over again.

EXCERPT:

AISHE

I come from a family that burns with love. You wouldn’t understand unless you were one of us. I’m not just talking my father and my mother—I’m talking every one of my ancestors. It’s in our genetic build to spend all of our energy on love.

Once we come of age, it strikes and blazes with a fire that eats you alive. This love is a plague that boils in my race and in my culture, and I wouldn’t know a different way unless I’d broken free and seen strangers love with milder flames.

Tonight, my eyes go from the merchandise on my table to the blond-headed burst of life hopping off the stage. His gaze shimmers with amusement, a cocky lip twitching as he slaps high-fives to guys and pinches girl-cheeks on his way over.

“Aishe! You got those super-tight, hot little tees with the broken heart thingy on the front? The ones the chicks dig?” he asks once he’s in front of me, Emil, the vocalist of Clown Irruption, one of the hottest alt-rock indie-bands out there. I’ve been their merch girl for a few months now. Each night, I zoom in on Emil with less and less difficulty.

“Yeah. Troll picked them up this morning,” I say referring to their tour manager.

“This is so cool—finally we see actual merch money,” Emil laughs out. Then he sets a hand to the table and squints at me. “You’ve done much better than your cousin. I mean, Shandor, man.” He shakes his head playfully. “He couldn’t draw dudes to the stand worth shit.”

My face loosens in a smile. I send a subtle glance at Shandor, who’s busy wrapping things up on stage, coiling cables and breaking down drums. To sell T-shirts wasn’t what he burned for. Shandor was born with the plague of our people too, but he hasn’t found his beloved yet. My people, we need something to obsess over, so if it’s not a man’s love for a woman or vice versa, it’s something else, and Shandor, he loves his music. Once the band promoted him from merch guy to monitors on stage, he recommended me to fill his spot, and voilà, here I am.

Shandor raises his head and stills on us, focus intent from under dark locks. He’s got a sixth sense for when guys chitchat with me. Like me, he left our traveling community years back, but the need to protect any girl of our people is so deep-rooted I doubt he ever questions it. Shandor would do everything in his power to stop any man, employer or not, from toying with his little cousin.

I straighten so that I’m tall for my height. Though I’m not overly curvy, I’m lean and strong. Supposedly, I’m also fiery, a bit fierce, a bit ferocious, traits that make me who I am, traits I don’t need here in the outside world as opposed to amongst those I was born to.

I intimidate most men with the stance I take right now, but I can’t intimidate Shandor. He glares, telling me without words what not to do, and next he pierces his stare into Emil’s back. Oblivious, Emil juts his index finger at the case of lukewarm beers behind me, wiggles it back and forth quickly, lips pursed in anticipation. “Hand over one of those babies, will ya?”
