In this grippingly emotional New Adult novel from the author of Caged in Winter, what you want isn’t always what you need…
Jason’s been living (and loving) the rich playboy lifestyle for five years, but now his parents are pressuring him to get involved in the family business. The last thing he wants is another obligation, but when his best friend moves out of state and asks Jason to look after his sister, he can’t just say no.
Tessa had to grow up way too soon. After dealing with the aftermath of her parents’ deaths, then becoming a teenage mom, she knows the meaning of responsibility. Which is why, at twenty-two, she’s looking for so much more than a party boy. She’s looking for someone who can stand by her and her daughter…forever.
A relationship between them is doomed from the start, but who says they can’t have a little fun? But as Jason gets closer to Tessa—and her daughter—fun starts to turn into something else… Something Jason’s not sure he’s ready for.
5 Stars (but it should have been 6)
Wow….I just finished this book and it so exceeded my expectations I almost don’t have words.(almost) The only other book I’ve read by Brighton was a novella and while I enjoyed it, it really didn’t prepare me for how truly phenomenal this book would be. Because this book was exactly that…Phenomenal. This book made me cry, gave me butterflies in my stomach, it had me laughing out loud, it stole my breath and had me smiling so much it hurt.
Lets start with Tessa. I really loved Tessa. She was such a real character to me. She worked hard to be a good mom and didn’t have things easy, but she loved her daughter and did everything she could to put Haley first. It was great watching her figure out what she wanted and how to balance that with what she and Haley needed. But the best thing about Tessa was that she was brave and honest and forgiving and willing to take a chance on a guy that everyone warned her wasn’t worth it.
Now Jason….Oh Jason was….ummm how do I describe him? Jason was EVERYTHING. Jason was asked by his best friend Cade to keep an eye on Tessa, Cade’s little sister and the girl Jason himself grew up thinking of as a littler sister. And watching Jason step up and look after Tessa and Haley was simply beautiful. Jason and Tessa are awesome, but Jason and Haley…Jason and Haley will melt your heart. Jason and Haley would melt Jack Frost’s heart. Jason and Haley are everything you could ever hope them to be and then a little bit more than that.
One of the very best things about this book was that nothing that happened was what I expected. Sometimes these books get too cliché, too predictable. But this one wasn’t, it zigged when I thought it was going to zag. It kept me guessing and Tessa and Jason both kept surprising me. And the end, the end just took my breath away.
If I could, I would give this book 6 stars, it was that good. I will go back and read this book over and over again, it will end up with well worn pages and creased covers and being let out to everyone I can talk into reading it.
